Shifting my thinking…

I don’t know if anyone else watches this show, I absolutely love it. The basic idea is that people bring in their worn and broken heirlooms and one or more of a team of skilled craftspeople fix and restore them. The show can actually get pretty emotional at times, I’ve shed more than one tear hearing the stories and seeing the gratitude people display when something that was pretty much trashed is brought back to life. And there have been some real treasures that have passed through the shop.

So here’s the thing - I’ve been content to dabble in watches, pick up a fun piece here and there. To this point, my purchases have been $500 or less. I’m turning 69 this year and my son is turning 40. He loves watches as much or more than I do. Maybe it’s time to shift from the fun, inexpensive stuff to a “grail watch” for each of us. I know his current aspirational watch, but it’s out of range for a pastor with a wife and two young girls. I’d love to gift him that watch.

I also have a short list of watches I would seriously love to own and that I know he would love to inherit someday 🙂.

So the question is, do I have the discipline to go for these higher end watches and skip the “whoa, that’s a killer Black Friday deal,” stuff I tend to gravitate toward? Only time will tell 😉.

Thanks for letting me think out loud…

Curious…if $500 is the norm what pricepoint would you be aiming for?

Perfect timing to set one of your New Year’s resolutions to be disciplined and not be swayed by deals.

All the best and hope you achieve your goal of getting the higher end watches you desire!

In the big scheme of things, he loves the Black Bay 58. That’s the first target, I’m somewhere between an Explorer II and a Fifty Fathoms 🧐. Who knows where those prices will end up 😂.

Funny I just got a BB58 for Christmas…certainly attainable…for you that is a wide range…maybe something in between? Lots of options

If you're a pastor I think you have that discipline. A thought that's helped me is "Is it's only a good deal if it's for a watch I already wanted. It's a bad deal if I'm only buying it because it's a good price."

As long as this is just disposable income for you, and you are aren't raiding your retirement fund, then I would say go for it.

My son is the one who is the pastor and he is extremely disciplined! That’s part of the reason the BB58 would be way in the future for him 🙂. Your advice is spot on!

Ha, I think I’ve got it covered. I just need to make sure I run out of days before I run out of dollars 🙂.

Reading comprehension in back of a swaying minivan leaves a bit to be desired apparently

I didn’t state that very clearly. That’s what happens when I think out loud 😂. But to your point, there are some great watches at a more affordable price point than Rolex or Blancpain!! Seamaster Aqua Terra comes to mind, for instance. I want to hit the target of watches to be treasured 🙂.

Not trying to tell you anything price wise…you like what you like and the Explorer is so versatile…over the last year I figured out how much I like Tudor…I love the matte finishes and the vintage tool vibe and the snowflake hands 😁…I can appreciate Rolex (a vintage no date Sub maybe?) but in general they are too blingy for me…I look at all watches but I know what I’m targeting…anxious to see what you end up getting
