The wonderful world of watch collecting

Although I’ve had many watches over the years from Swatch, Casio & Seiko to name a few my gateway drug of choice was a TAG Heuer. I know they are not everyone’s flavour but I find they a good entry point.

What was the gateway watch that got you into collecting??

Nice. Don’t really see a lot of TAGs on here for some reason

It was Tag for me too. Blue Aquaracer quartz. I started googling it and was intrigued about why Tag got slagged off a lot. In my innocence I just thought it was a bona fide luxury brand and I wanted to treat myself. Then I got intrigued by mechanical watches, and bought an Orient Kano to see what I thought. Several watches later - and more money spent on them than I'd ever imagined - the Tag is my daily beater for tennis, swimming and cycling. Still love seeing the light catch the sunburst dial!

It wouldn't be my first choice for a beater if I was starting now. But that's how it ended up. And I'm glad to have it

I’m not saying there the best brand out there but they do make some good watches and are a great entry point to collecting

I totally agree with you. And for what it's worth, the only time a random person - other than a fellow watch geek - has shouted out to me "nice watch!" was when I was wearing my Tag. It was in the gym at Sunway Lagoon hotel, Kuala Lumpur. My hunch is that Tag still has recognition and status with some of the wider public - if not so much with the watch community. Although people are generally very fair about Tag on WC (of course they prefer the Heuer part of it).
