Watch storage - to Dry Box or Not to Dry Box

I realise not everyone here lives in tropical climates like Singapore.

But I do, and I have a question about how you all store your watches.

Here I keep them alongside all my photographic equipment and lenses in a dry box that keeps them at a constant 41% humidity.

That does rather curtail the size of my collection as I’m seriously running out of space.

So my questions are:

  • Is a dry box important when you live in highly humid climates, especially for automatic watches

  • At what %age humidity should I keep them (I read that 41% is about right as it’s not too dry to harm the seals)

Any other watch storage advice appreciated!

This raises an interesting point on the other side of the coin: what is too dry of a climate to not have a humidity controlled solution?

To answer your first question, or try at least, are the seals airtight enough that ambient humidity is not a problem? Or more simply; is a humidity controlled solution just for preserving the seals (assuming you always have the crown closed)?

@ayadai had a recent post about dry box usage for watches on an island.
