When I started wearing watches way back in the 1970s, I regularly had allergy issues with watch cases and clasps. Eventually, I evaded the problem by switching to watches with plastic cases, and - fairly rare back then - titanium ones. I don't have a problem with the stainless steel in modern watches though.
So, I am wondering: what metals were used for watch cases back then? Are these allergy issues common (and known, documented), or is it just me (and a select few unlucky) that suffers from this stuff?

You might have a nickel allergy, which I have. Unless the watch is 316L stainless steel or titanium, my wrist gets irritated after a few hours of wearing.
