I only have the classic tissot lelocle with the powermatic movement and It's a very nice watch. Your model seems older but Valjoux is know for their chronograph movement so I think it is good quality.
But I would go for a more basic watch if it is your first automatic watch.

I kind of liked Sieko SPB121J1 but it's a bit over budget for me (can get it available for around 550 USD)
