Hey man, if you're looking for something in the $1k - $2k range, I don't think you can do better than something with an ETA Valjoux 7750.  These are called "workhorse" movements, and "in-house" is all the rage these days.  But, don't fall for the marketing.  "In-house" is just another way to say, "We'll lock you into our proprietary movement that no watchmaker can work on, except for our service people, and then charge you an arm and a leg for anything you might ever need.  And, oh, by the way, because movements are so complex, and R&D is so high to make them, we under-invested, so quality ain't gonna be that good with our in-house movement."

The Valjoux 7750 has powered nearly every brands' chronographs, reliably, for decades upon decades.  They're high quality, they're reliable, they're easy and relatively inexpensive to maintain, etc., etc.

The Porsche Design Chronotimer Series 1 is an incredible bargain.  You can get these watches new from places like ShopWorn for under $2k.  Timeless minimalist design, great legibility, titanium cases, and Valjoux 7750!

The Hamilton Intramatic is a solid choice in this price range with different colours and options.

Thanks for the replies. i was also looking at the seiko NE88a. I think it has a column wheel much like the 7750. However, it is a new movement. Not nearly as time tested as the 7750.
