The 5 that got me started..?

This was the Seiko 5 that got me into automatic/mechanical watches, or at least it’s the first automatic watch I bought for myself. What better way to begin than with a Seiko 5—a classic choice for every newbie? I had always liked having watches before getting this Seiko 5; the ones I had were mostly battery-powered or no longer available in the market. Remember 25 Hours? I owned one from them on my 18th birthday, and it lasted well until one day, a slip of the hand caused a great landing on the floor, and boy, smashed glass. It was a precious gift from my sister, so I had it wrapped and kept with the broken bits.

Fast forward to 2019, I was looking around for something on a leather band for my last ‘replacement’ and as a daily beater when I chanced upon this being sold as ‘almost new,’ marking my very first deal done. True enough, the fellow seller was communicative and explained a lot about how to set it, followed by tips and tricks on setting the day and date. I had lots of fun admiring the watch. Upon closer look, you’ll see the Seiko 5 logos repeated on the dial in a subtle manner. I have to say; it’s a pleasant surprise when I noticed that. It was mostly the clean and elegant-looking dial that caught my eye when I first saw it through the listing.

The lume on this watch is truly impeccable, casting a soft glow along the hour and minute hands, as well as the tip of the indices, especially in slightly shaded areas – a touch of pure elegance.

Now, the 7S26 movement, with its 21 jewels, may lack hacking seconds and manual winding functions. Yet, considering its performance for the price, it's proven to be a reliable companion for everyday wear.

As it stands, I've sent it off to the watchmaker for a full servicing. It's interesting how, despite its technical details, I never thought I'd find myself missing this piece. Perhaps it's more than just the mechanics; there's a certain sentimental value that's grown over time.
