SEIKO Sumo SPB247

The eye-catching SEIKO Sumo "Isan: Phi Ta Khon" (SPB247J1) commemorates the 30th anniversary of the SEIKO Thailand subsidiary.

The presentation is special, in keeping with the theme of the watch.

Outside of its packaging, we find a classic Sumo: bulky, detailed and surprisingly wearable.

The lugs are perforated to facilitate swapping between the issue bracelet or rubber strap. The narrow 20 mm bracelet and its thinness are often criticised, but they are the essence of the model.

It has a large 120 click “set” bezel, with an anodized aluminium insert that combines red and black and gilted print.

At 4 o'clock we see a large screw-down crown, without any guards. It doesn’t need them.

The threaded case back displays the Great Wave of Kanagawa, the watch specs, the serial number and an image of the Phi Ta Khon festival.

It has a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment. It adds a magnifier over the date window at 3 o'clock.

The watch offers water resistance of 200 m according to ISO 6425.

The dial is the most striking feature of this version.

The white chapter ring with black markers creates a large clearance from the bezel. The base of the dial is a satin greyish black, with a radial texture divided into 24 sectors. The result is a three-dimensional sunburst effect, providing incredible dynamism.

The applied indexes and hands are gilted, filled with spectacular Lumibrite. The seconds hand combines gold on the counterweight and red.

The impressions on the dial are minimal: "SEIKO" at 12 o'clock and the "X" of ProSpex, "AUTOMATIC" and "DIVER'S 200m" at 6 o'clock.

It is powered by the SEIKO caliber 6R35, the updated version of the 6R15 with a 70-hour power reserve.

Those who can handle the Sumo size will really enjoy the "presence" on the wrist. In addition, the "Phi Ta Khon" version adds a large dose of "exoticism", something to talk about after bathing or diving.

Really nice watch. Not sure why the US gets the water down releases.

Well, Thailand has been known as the source of many colourful limited editions. But I get you. It's fairly similar in Europe, where they also play it safe.
