Cambodian Prime Minister to give watches to world leaders in ASEAN Summit

First off, I'm not from Cambodia, but I'm curious to know if any of you folks know a little more about this "Prince Horology" tourbillon.

Apparently, the PM of Cambodia loves high-end watches, and has been criticized for sporting a Patek and Richard Mille while many Cambodians languish in poverty.

If you come from a country that's struggling with poverty, the last thing you want to do is squander your funds on an essentially useless object.

True.

However, if we were to give the guy every hypothetical benefit of the doubt: he was independently wealthy before becoming involved in politics, none of the money spent on the watches was in any way connected with government, it remains a terrible political move in a system in which political power is gained through popular consent.

So I read a bit about the Cambodian government, and it turns out that it is a democracy in name only.  The Prime Minister has been in power since 1985, and has banned the opposition.  His party has consolidated all branches of government and runs the country as an autocracy.

Handing out tourbillons seems perfectly reasonable considering the circumstances.

That's insane but at the same time makes perfect sense. I only wish that by some stroke of luck someone on Watchcrunch gets a hold of one of these watches and gives us a review with macro footage.
