What's on your wish list?

Hello everyone. This is not my first post but kind of the first topic I wanted to hear more about from other watch collectors. I'm relatively new to this "hobby" and being such I am discovering my taste changes rapidly as I discover new brands, new models and new options for different watches that caught my eye. I am sure this is a 'newbie' syndrome and most of us had gone through this process.

Since I'm far from rich and like many of you got commitments and family I need to support I can't just buy every watch I like. It's not just the financial cost but also justifying the new purchase to others (you got another one? 😆).

Therefore, with a professional background of an engineer, I took a logical approach and compiled a wishlist, saved on my phone. My list is designed like so:

  1. A total of 5 watches I want to get in my lifetime.

  2. Those are categorized by grail watch(s), watches I can afford to buy every 3 to 5 years (and justify the purchase) and watches that I can buy every year.

  3. I aspire to update the list every time I find a new watch that I like more. The method is: decide which category that watch belongs to and what watch will it replace on the list, so that the total is no more than 5.

  4. Once I get that watch it's removed from the list and I can add a new one to it.

At this point you're probably wondering what's on my list. Well currently my list is as follows:

  • Grail watch: Omega seamaster diver 300.

  • Watches for every 5 years: Tudor black bay, grand seiko white snowflak.

  • Yearly watches: Hamilton khaki field automatic, Seiko Alpinist

I'm considering to replace GS with the Seiko presage midnight blue (though not at the same category, but for the cost of the later I can afford a higher category watch sooner).

Hope this makes sense 😁.

Do you have a watch wish list? Or do you manage your collection method differently? I will be interested to know what's on your list?

I am an engineer also, and I can tell you I've thrown away my list (numbers 1 - 4) a long time ago. Watch collecting is nothing analytical and methodical. I have and sold some of those brands you mentioned but still are looking for more. The only rule I follow now is one in and one out of my one box. Don't over analyze.

Don't get stuck in the "ticking boxes" type of collecting, you'll wear your favourites and not wear others.

Buy what YOU like & sod everyone else

Seamaster is an excellent choice - I'd recommend getting your Grail first, you'll save money in the long run because any "lesser" watches will be stealing wrist time from that Grail , so you'll think twice before buying them.

Good luck, have fun & don't take it too seriously 😁👍🏻

Thanks for the tip. Just trying to tame the beast and slow myself down from spending my limited resources on every possibility.

I like the approach of Grail first. 😉

Welcome to the hobby. I like how it brings micro engeneering with art. Also, I like the topic, your planning and the list. I'm pleased to share my current wish list.

. Cartier santos Dumont xl

. Seiko tuna marine master 300 sbbn045 (very hard to find)

. Sinn u50 boat steel on bracelet

This mostly will be funded by minimizing the collection a bit. With no rush nor crash selling.

Best of luck and enjoy the hobby

My list changes constantly but atm I'm hoping to add these 2 within the next 3 years.

Right now, I want the Hamilton American Classic Pan Europe Day Date Auto. I really want a Swiss made watch, and I really love that blue dial pairs with that NATO strap. I will have to probably save money for a year to get it, but it will definitely be worth the wait.

I'm also an engineer and love lists. I have a note in my phone for a watch wishlist. I have it broken down into categories, such as dive watches, dress watches, sport/everyday watches, and quartz/beaters. When I see a watch I like, I add it to the category it best fits. Periodically I drop each category to my top 3 if I can't narrow it down to 1.

The current piece at the top of the list is the green Longines Spirit Zulu 39mm. It'll be another couple of years before I'm able to pick one up, so all other watch purchases are on hold.

The Omega seamaster summer blue is a beautiful watch. My ONLY issue with it is the lack of case back display (I couldn't find a version with transparent case).
