I was thinking about how my tastes have changed over time to the point that watches I started off hating have become my most adored.
A prime example is my Casio DW-290. When I first saw a picture of this watch, I couldn’t believe that anyone would ever buy it. I despised everything about the design—the case shape, the text, the buttons, etc.—but for some reason over time the piece started to grow on me.
Eventually I bought it and absolutely love wearing it. I love that it has tremendous wrist presence but isn’t shiny or flashy, and I love how big and chunky it is while still being lighter than all of my steel 36mm watches. It’s also more comfortable than my G-Shocks because of the way the strap connects to the case. Overall it’s a total winner for me.

In the 2010s, I was stationed in Japan and was a Seiko fanboy. I scoffed at the idea wearing a Citizen...until I accidentally left my Astron at my apartment. I was in a such a hurry to get the ship before an underway I left it at home. When the ship pull into Sasebo, I went to get a temporary watch just for the underway and got this for $87. The watch went from "this will do" to "better than I thought" to " this is genius". I've never had a watch that was so small and yet easier to read than watches much bigger. And the lume stored so much energy, sunlight or flourescent, which great because I worked in dark rooms. And the of the it being solar.
The Mission Impossible…
It’s one of my favourites! It’s so ugly I find myself thinking it beautiful. Bit like on a night out when the girl at 10pm doesn’t look so good but after a few tequilas…..
