Seiko Coutura SNP008

Almost 20 years ago i bought this watch. Back then I was a one watch man. I wore only Seiko’s and this the first watch I ever owned that cost more than $100. I actually bought it in a jewelry store so now I know I paid retail for it which was around $600.

I wore this watch 24 hours a day for over 15 years. Kept almost perfect time. The perpetual calendar was awesome.

Then I made the biggest mistake. I decided to send it off to get polished. I am not sure what they did but hands get hung up during date change. I made them give me the money back on the cleaning. Losing this watch was hard. It was like losing a family member.

This is when i suddenly became a watch addict. But not sure any watch will truly replace this one. I wish seiko would bring this model back.

"It was like losing a family member". Gosh 😳🧐

I always had a soft spot for the Coutura range, then did some lovely and quite forward modern designs. I would love one now. Sorry about your watch !

·

I like the fact that it was kinetic. I really didn’t know the difference in quartz and automatic back then. The word Solar kinda cheapened a watch in my eyes. Now i wear nothing but automatics. Really surprised it held a charge that many years.

·

I’m sorry to hear this. The longest I’ve worn a single watch is five years, so I can begin to imagine the disappointment.

·

I had a Seiko like this with the crazy hands you turn the dial at 6 with the crown and the hands do all sorts of crazy stuff, it also had a perpetual calendar up to 2030 something!

Well say had I still have it in a drawer somewhere I wore it for probably 15 years got it in 1993 and paid £360 for it! I should see if it can be resurrected 🤷‍♂️

Anyone know what the +1 is at 9 on the Coutura?

I believe that is actually the day in some language, not sure which one. Have made same misinterpretation in past.

😔that is the leap years. Once you set date you never have to set again…coolest feature.

·

The watch above was perpetual that I had never had to set date again well until battery ran out but coutura was kinetic I see so all the time it was on it kept going, well until it couldn’t store energy!

Never seen a watch display leap years 🤷‍♂️pretty cool feature eh!

Speaking of that….that was another cool feature. If it sat still long enough with no movement it would go to sleep. When it movd again hands would start going an get back to current time. It could stay asleep for 6 months. Never tested that though.

Eventually got this to replace it but is is too big and bulky….I rarely wear it. Just isn’t the same feeling on the wrist.

Nice! That’s a shame I like big and bulky watches, you soon get used to them, what year is that one?

I think I have had it about three years. It is still available new.I like to wear it when I go visit my daughter in Hawaii. It is easy to change time zones. Because it has radio sync it is always to the second

Is it now I may investigate I see it’s solar no battery at all?

Other watch was kinetic this one is solar. Works the same way. There is a capacitor that charges up.that is basically a rechargable battery. It can go bad eventually. But my first watch will still work today….hands just get hung up. It is over 20 years old now.

The bracelet gets pretty banged up and you can’t replace it. They have discontinued the replacement bracelet plus it was like $150.

·

I see the odd bracelet, that’s a poor design when you can’t change the bracelet!

It is still a cool watch and I'll probably have it for several more years. You can get them for a lot less than retail if you watch on Ebay.
