Facebook Marketplace Steals

Added two more pieces to my collection today.

  • A Skagen 396LTMLN (never been worn)

  • Croton Patriot Series Limited Edition (36/1000) Statue of Liberty Watch

Picked both pieces up off Facebook Marketplace today for $10 each. At first, I thought the posting was too good to be true, and sat on it for a day or two before messaging the seller. Asked some questions about the watches and if they had other pictures. Seemed like this was just someone looking to get rid of stuff around their home. Decided to bite, and drove out to meet the seller. They were close enough anyway that even if it was a scam, I wasn't too far out of my element.

Turned out, the seller was a little old lady who was able to give me some backstory on the watches. The Croton was bought shortly after 9/11 by her brother, as he was concerned that the Statue of Liberty would be next, and got them for each member of his family. The Skagen, she had but just never wore it. The protective film was still on the glass and back (though now the back has a small scratch from trying to pry the back open to get to the battery).

The Skagen works after replacing the battery, this will be a nice everyday watch and maybe even for something a little dressier. I have not been able to get the Croton back opened, so unsure if this works, but it looks well worn, so I am assuming it does. The band is a little worn, with the end beginning to fray, so it will need to be replaced at some point.

Overall, for $20 for both watches, I feel like I made off with a steal. Aside from the minor scratches and knicks on the Croton from 20+ years of wear, it still looks in very nice condition. Both will be good additions to my collection.

She must be so happy to clear these out of her home and get enough money for a combo meal! I'm glad it worked out for you, as it's obviously a good deal. Good luck getting that case back off.

Thanks. Managed to get the Skagen opened and replaced the battery. Works perfectly. Haven't tried the Croton yet. I'm hoping it works, if not I won't be too bummed, and depending on what it may be, may be worth fixing. Just need to see what battery it takes and go from there.
