Stronger together!

Hey the Crunchers, got a bit of a curious bug about the tales behind some iconic watch models. So, I figured I'd dive into the history of one model each day and share the deets right here with you all. If I slip up or miss something juicy, don't hold back, drop a comment and let me know. It will start in my next post !

Great start. Perhaps a stock photo of the watch? McQueen wearing it? I am curious about your statement that this was one of the first automatic chronographs. Perhaps some dates of others might support the assertion?

Also, it might be helpful to relate this endorsement with other cinematic endorsements. My knowledge is limited but prior to James bond there were very few actors being tied with a brand. Certainly Paul Newman but which came first?

That's a good question @Skilly. I discover some interesting informations about it.

At the beggining partnership wasn't really partnership. For exemple, the James Bond character was initially associated with Rolex in the early films, starting with "Dr. No" in 1962, where Sean Connery wore a Rolex Submariner. This partnership was based on the character's portrayal rather than a formal agreement between Rolex and the filmmakers.

A few years later the connection between Paul Newman and the Rolex Daytona didn't stem from an official partnership between the actor and Rolex. Instead, it originated around 1968-1969 when Newman’s wife, Joanne Woodward, gifted him a Daytona during the filming of "Winning," where he played a race car driver. The watch, distinguished by its unique dial, became known among collectors as the "Rolex Daytona Paul Newman," celebrated for its design and scarcity.

In 1971 it was almost the same situation, Steve McQueen famously wore a TAG Heuer Monaco in the movie "Le Mans," influenced by his friendship with racing driver Jo Siffert, a Heuer ambassador. Although the choice to wear the Monaco was based on its suitability for the racing theme of the film, there was no formal endorsement deal between McQueen and TAG Heuer. Nonetheless, McQueen’s association with the Monaco significantly boosted the watch’s fame.

The first formal Partnership was in 1995, with the release of "GoldenEye," Omega became the official watch of James Bond due to a formal partnership between Omega and the producers of the James Bond film series. This marked a significant shift from Rolex to Omega as the go-to brand for the iconic spy character.

Yes for today post I will add a picture of the watch I'm talking about ! Thank you for the advice
