iPhone 15 Pro Macro

I put my Sony a7iii mirrorless camera with 50mm lens and macro tube extenders up against my iPhone. I was never into macro photography, so I don’t have a dedicated macro lens in my collection of about a half dozen lenses. That limited my ability to get really close with the Sony. In contrast, the macro lens on the iPhone could get as close as a few centimeters away from the watch.

One thing I learned is that the lighting with my Sony was much better. I was able to trigger a large soft box and a secondary light bounced off a reflector. In contrast, I used a lumacube led panel for light.

The first photo above is from the Sony. All other photos are from the iPhone. None have been cropped.

Cool shots, mate. So which one do you prefer?

I realized afterwards that I wasn’t saving the iPhone photos in the highest resolution. I think there are three options, the best being RAW, which is what I use with my Sony. I think if I had a dedicated macro lens for my Sony, it would win hands down. However, photography, like horology, is an expensive hobby.

I own a 105mm Macro Lens (Nikkor Z105) but I'll never take a photo of one of my watches. I have a fear of what I may find. The iPhone pics are impressive though.

That's why, with photography and horology, you gotta have a limit. For me, current photography limit is my nice compact (ish) APS-CFuji X-S10 and 3 lenses and if I EVER get a FF body it will NOT BE A LEICA. Maybe Canon or Sony....

I'm with you in that sentiment, sir. It is an expensive hobby. Interesting though, that you don't have a macro lens among your 6 other lenses. I guess they're more of zoom and telephoto variants?

Like you, I use my mobile phone for close up or macro shots, and my Canon EOS3000D for all others. I haven't tried a macro extender yet, but will surely get one soon.

I was mostly a portrait and event photographer. Usually carried two cameras and used mostly fixed focal length lenses. Only one zoom. Never had to get closer than a few feet.
