Tokyo Watch Shopping

Myself and my buddy are looking to go to Tokyo just for some watch shopping…. Any pitfalls to avoid? Anyone from the Crunch in Tokyo and would be interested in meeting up?(Photos are from a trip last fall)

If you're going to try to negotiate on anything be sure about the watch in case you want to walk away to check out other things. Once you leave, they won't bother lowering the price again.

Strong advice! Thanks. Vietnam you could do the renegotiation…

I just got back from Tokyo last week. If you want a one stop shop with all the watch stores, go out to Nakano Broadway. You’ll find a bunch of smaller shops and then the crown jewel, Jackroad and Betty. Here are some tips.

  • Bring your passport

  • Most shops at Nakano don’t open until noon. Jack road opens at 11

  • Plenty of places to eat there so I’d recommend eating first before shopping

  • Don’t haggle. It’s not local custom to do so.

Can you ask "what's the best price?"

Can you ask "what's the best price?"

The best price is the tax free price, unless there’s another sale layered on top.

Gorgeous photos just need to add your new wrist shot when you find a matching watch!!! 🙏

My dad and I each bought a Seiko Presage from Bic Camera, a large electronics store. We found that the discount there was slightly bigger than the department stores, and the selection was surprisingly not bad. Look at their website to see what coupon/discount they are offering on watches, and if it’s bigger than the standard 5% tourist discount from the department stores, it’s worth a trip!

For example, my Sharp Edge Shironeri is listed at $1K USD (pre-tax). When I bought it at Bic last year, it came out to $760 (all in) with the discount and FX rate factored in. And, it didn’t trigger customs… I think it was just below the threshold. Not bad!
