I’m just curious to know how you all think. With a 3.000$ budget would you buy vintage (GS, Rolex, omega, etc…) go for a new watch from a big brand (Hamilton, Longines, Seiko, etc…) go the micro brand route where for 3.000$ you are getting a very good watch (Horage, AnOrdain, Studio Underdog, etc…) or just save up and get a higher end watch or a grail watch?
Depends on the day and watch. If the ask is should you save for a more expensive piece you are truly after? Yes. Buying all the less expensive watches as substitutes won’t scratch that itch. Only you know which is the best path for you.
For me, it boil down to if the new watch you were after was in the same style of the grail watch. Then just save for the grail...
I have some vintage watches, but I do not like wearing them currently as I am the father of a 2 year old who is always running around or swimming with him so a 1969 IWC cal79 just doesn't land on my wrist often. but the styling of vintage watches is seriously where my heart is.
I put my name on a list for the Tudor Pelagos 39 recently because I really wanted a thin diver and saw it as an upgrade to the BB58, but then I ordered a Horage Supersede because I'd rather buy a watch that spoke to me more and was more useful. With that being said, I love the lume gum drops, sun ray dial (not a fan of the bezel brushing), love me the lume on the bezel however, and the titanium. But don't like the 21mm lug width and the lack of spring bracelet.
But I felt like I was compelled more by hype and quick satisfaction of getting it on the wrist than what I truly wanted.
As every year that passes, I have seen brands bring better watches to market for what I feel enthusiasts have been screaming for years. GS is probably 1-2 years away from making my dream watch. And I will sit patiently for it. Until then, I will only buy watches that I feel can be the watch I want on my wrist everyday.
