De Ville - Love or Hate or What?

As just one watch fan that follows this site fairly regularly, I've never understood the under appreciation for the Omega De Ville line.

I've seen some ugly watches on this site. Some really ugly and very expensive, tacky ones too. Many De Ville models look better than a lot of this stuff. Yet, there still seems to be some type of apprehension (hate?) towards this line.

No, they didn't land on the Moon. But they're not ugly either. Disclaimer: I do own more Speedmasters & Seamasters than I do De Villes. But I'd strongly argue some of my DV's are better looking than quite a few Speedy's. Yup, I just said that.

And the Chronoscope & Rattrapante, both are engineering marvels.

So, what gives? Yes, here's my three. Go crazy.

I do like some of the older ones.

I think that the overall dress watch segment is just not as popular as others at the moment. Styles change, things pass. Whatever isn’t ‘in’ eventually becomes hot again. There’s nothing wrong with the De Ville line other than dress watches not being popular at this moment.

Great question. I’m looking forward to the comments. I think many of the Deville’s new and vintage are beautiful representations of a range of classic dress watches. And, while dress watches don’t get the same ink as tool watches, the fact is you can wear a dress watch for pretty much any occasion and vice versa. Last point, Omega makes a damn good watch.

I get it...to a small degree. Back to my pic, the center watch is certainly in the 'dressy' category. But the other two, the Chronoscope & Rattrapante, really??? With those complications, what's more 'tool' than what these are?

I'm not carrying the torch for De Ville, but if these are not tools, then I sure as hell don't know a better description. Certainly, doesn't make any logical sense to me.
