Sam's Watch Review (Addiesdive MY-H8) 'Captain Willard' Homage

How I Got It

As I mentioned in my previous review for the Casioak Mini, I am in need of a beater watch to go to work. I started searching for a watch that can theoretically last forever and I came across this one in Aliexpress. The price was $66.14 when I purchased it recently and so far I have no problem wearing it inside the swimming pool for almost 8 hours a day.

Build Materials & Appearance

The watch is a Seiko Captain Willard Homage with the asymmetrical cushion case with a signed crown at just below the 4 hour mark. Case, bracelet and bezel including back case is stainless steel and the watch is quite heavy when I first hold it in my hand. The bezel is accompanied by ceramic finish on top for the markings and BGW9 lume. Date function at 3 hour mark. Applied indices are C3 lumed and there are minute ring outside the hour marker. Crown are screw-down to lock for better water resistance. Bracelet are solid link and solid end links as well. The watch is big but the short lug to lug just perfectly sits in top of my wrist but this is the largest sized watch suitable for 6 inch wrist.

Pros & Cons Starting with Cons then Pros

The only thing i don't like about the watch is that hour indices position. If it were to be applied at the same place as the minute ring then it would make the dial look proportionate. With the current position of the hour indices it just makes the dial looks small while the watch itself is pretty big. I don't mind the logo and the writings cause I really believe the dial can be made to look less 'busy' if the hour indices are applied alongside the minute ring at the edge if the dial.

The good however is just great. I won't say the bracelet is bad cause for the price, we shouldn't even argue. I changed into a rubber strap with Butterfly style clasp anyway but I still feel the bracelet is quite good for the price. The bezel got nice lume which is quite unique and they somehow feels much better than my Seiko 5 😂. It also comes with sapphire crystal which is basically a win for me using the watch as my beater. Everything else is great. NH35 from my experience getting around +30s/-15s which Im already grateful enough.

Summary

I love the watch. I hope it can last a very long time as it is going to be worn the most when I'm working. Water resistance seems fine for now and I hope will continue on the be useful at least for many more years coming before I have to change the gaskets. If you love Captain Willard and you wanted to try out the design before pulling the trigger getting the Seiko, I really recommend trying this one out first as it is very cheap and works flawlessly. Great beater as well!
