My thing with the Rado DiaStar
This is a short rant/love letter to the good old DiaStar. I saw one for sale at a local pawn shop for R4000 (±210 USD) and I was quite tempted. Vintage, automatic, 35mm and enough gold to make Mansa Musa blush, which is a recipe for excellence in my book. One slight problem: it was bedazzled. Not iced out, just with a light sprinkling of diamonds. I don't have any of my own pictures, so I stole all of these off of Google, some being vintage and some being new. This was the same model as the one in the shop. Only difference is that the one in the pawn shop has a chip in the faceted crystal.
It's about as modest as gold and diamonds can get, at least compared to some other models:
I hate diamonds. They're a girl's best friend, thus not suitable for a gigachad sigma male redpilled chad gigachad ripped muscular Andrew Tate man muscular chad like me. (I have ingested 300 bottles of steroids and an unhealthy amount of YouTube Shorts edits.)
But I like them. I actually think I like the DiaStar like this. I have seen some dials without diamonds (for peasants, thus not suitable for rich man money flex rizz flex money Bugatti flexing man men like me) and it just looks... meh. I could go on and on about how the DiaStar has tungsten carbide nonsense inside it and how the plating will allegedly never wear off. I like that. The one in the pawn shop still looked mint even down to the clasp. I've seen a video where a man took a box-cutter (I call it a utility knife, but honestly, who cares?) and an electric screwdriver to his steel DiaStar to prove its scratch-resistance. He wasn't wrong. It still looked pristine after some abuse.
I think the DiaStar is too often slept on these days. There's a new one if you want reliability and a warranty, with the choice between quartz and mechanical. The vintage autos are still where it's at for me. What are your thoughts on the Rado DiaStar and bedazzled watches? I think one will suit me, if not make me look like a pimp or drug dealer. Or it will suddenly give me nieces and nephews because, despite me never having an uncle with a DiaStar, the DiaStar looks like the quintessential "uncle's watch."
My dearest apologies to all of my English teachers, past, present and future, as well as my readers for using the word, if it can even be called that, "rizz." Apologies to me too, because I had to put myself through a lot of torture to write it out.

I'm having trouble getting a sense of scale but I suspect the diamonds are tame enough to be plausibly discreet. I believe in a small window where diamond indices can be tasteful, refined, sophisticated and even practical. They catch the light for low-light visibility, don't ya know? But there is a fine line into cartoon garishness. I wouldn't be surprised if this was on the line.

This really toes the line between vulgarity and beauty. I sort of like it because of how it's in this uncanny valley between elegance and gaudiness.
