Holiday watch report

This year I made the conscious decision to take 2nd tier watches on holiday. Caravan sites are not known for their excessive security, so it was important for me to have watches that did not attract too much attention, while at the same time being appreciable to people who really know their watches. After much deliberation, I settled on 3 - Sinn 104, Speedmaster Automatic (Reduced), and my Vostok Amphibia.

The Vostok was my dedicated watersports watch, so it was largely used in the on-site leisure complex. The hair-nipper bracelet has been replaced by a Barton silicon strap, which makes it the perfect beater watch. Going from pool to steam room/Sauna with no problems at all. It kept reasonable time and the water stayed on the outside of the watch regardless of the changing heat and conditions. The bezel was not secure, and the looks weren't something that I would be comfortable wearing on a night out. But it did the job fine.

The Speedmaster was for trips in the car, cinema, shopping and restaurants. This actually meant it got a reasonable amount of use, but it doesn't have the specs to take it anywhere near water.

But the real star of the trip was the Sinn 104. I left the stock leather strap it came with at home and paired it with Barton green canvas strap, as this was going to be my outdoor activity watch. From the first day on the beach, through wet walks across the countryside, bathing the dog, swimming in the sea - it proved to be a solid, reliable performer. The day-date complication, the great lume, the accuracy, the size, and visibility meant it was a true GADA watch. It had similar specs as the Vostok, but it was just all-round better at everything.

Any summaries? For me, a good-looking GADA watch comes into its own on holidays. It allows you to be spontaneous as it has the specs to deal with everything without trips back to the resort to change watches.

How many watches do you take on holiday, and how do you choose?

Good choices.

For me I take Seamaster 300, Aqua Terra quartz & maybe Lunar Pilot, tho usually just the two Omega's.

You say about W/R on the Speedmaster, but my cousin (well off bank manager) has worn his multiple times in the sea!! No damage, but a hell of a lot braver than I'd be 😱😂

Wow, maybe that's ok with modern speedys. But mine is vintage, so there's no way I'm risking it 😬

Explorer 2 and Scurfa are both up to the task. Enjoy.

I've heard good things about the new FXD's. I like the look of the chronograph.
