NWA: Redwood Tactical Solar Diver V3 a.k.a. What the Blancpain X Swatch Should Have Been!

This arrived just a short bit ago today. I ordered it on Thursday of last week and it arrived today, Monday. Less than a week from order to delivery? I’m in. The total cost for this was $199. So far I am very impressed with this. Seiko solar movement, 40mm diameter, 20mm lugs, 48mm l2l, 11mm thick. Drilled lugs, sapphire crystal, 20bar, 120 cluck bezel that is easy to grip and mine has no slop. I would change the bezel insert from aluminum to steel, but that is a personal preference. The screw dowb crown is signed. The second hand hits all of the markers and the lume is impressive so far but I haven’t had a real chance to test it yet.

This is what the Blancpain X Swatch collab should have been. This is a watch that is designed to work without issue for several years unlike that piece of garbage. They say that the bioceramic is supposed to be good for the planet, the jury is still out on that one. Yes the System 51 movement is not battery powered and I can get behind that. But the watch is hermetically sealed and not serviceable. The System 51 movements are said to only last 2-5 years. So since it isn’t serviceable, it will be in a landfill once it breaks. Yep environmentally friendly.

In today's watch market all the budget watch offerings are either disposable or have disposable movements. Swatch would only ever use ETA movements and the lowest at that. All Swatch are disposable fun products not meant to be serious watches

True. For the price they want you would think they could actually use their heads.

I think we are taking Swatch X watch too serious. Seems they are just using their plastic image for marketing. Selling an automatic watch with a metal build would destroy their bottom line. I think most enthusiast know we can get a nice diver for under 400 bucks. But it works two ways. You can get any homage but is not a Blancpain you can get the Swatch x Blancpain but still not an actual Blancpain. The Swatch Group really thinks they are playing metal gymnastics when in reality the hype was more over the resell value not the actual watch.

The brand is Redwood out of Canada.

I really like what I’ve seen of these online. I want to have a Canadian watch, and I’m aiming for the white-dial solar one.

I think a big mistake by TSG was pricing it so high. The MoonSwatch was a hit with younger people, but $400 is a lot to swallow. It feels as if there is a luxury tax being applied to a Swatch that has no business being here. If it were priced at half and brought back down to a more unisex-friendly 40 mm, i could see it doing well unisexly and being a lot more available in winning the hearts of teenagers and college students, which would be a great demographic to tap.

I dislike this idea that a Swatch “should” be disposable. For one, it’s environmentally bad and I’ve never heard of anyone throwing away their Swatch. At most they are just lost to time, it seems. Swatch should use proper movements and all of them should be able to be opened and serviced/repaired like any other wristwatch out there.
