Sinn EZM 13 Review: A Totally Inappropriate Watch

First Off, a rather obvious disclaimer:  I own this watch, and therefore I am already biased.

I also love this watch with the understanding that it's not for everyone, and to be honest, it's certainly not for me.

Why do I love this watch if it's not for me? EZM is short for Einsatzzeitmesser, which the internet tells me is German for "Mission Timer."  I will choose to believe the Internet.   As the EZM name suggests, this is a rugged, purpose built, tank of a watch, and those descriptors do not in any way reflect my lifestyle.  And yet, I am drawn to its odd and lop-sided presentation and its "I do what I want" disposition.

The EZM 13 comes in at 41mm with a 20mm lug width.  It's powered by the Sinn SZ02 movement, which has a non-standard 60-minute chronograph minutes register.  The 13.1 model is currently available for $3,270 on bracelet or $3,140 on a rubber strap.

I'll never need its 500 meters of WR.  I'll never need its temperature resistance of -45 degrees Celsius to +80 degrees Celsius.  I'll hardly ever need the captive bezel or the 100mT of magnetic protection. I am sure I will need none of this over the top stuff while I dive at my desk.  But I appreciate that it is all there! And it's all wrapped up in a case with left-sided pushers and crown.

Some people think that the EZM 13.1 is a better look with no numerals on the dial. That  view certainly makes sense to me, but I think the redundant combo of numerals and markers adds to the watch's oddball charm.  And yes, certain purists will cry to the high heavens that it has a wonky 4:30 date window, but as others have said in the watch world, it's not nearly as wonky when taken in as part of the total package.  It manages to be unobtrusive and obvious at the same time.

All of this means that the Sinn EZM 13 is really a one-of-a-kind dive watch that will gleefully face anything you throw at it with a totally inappropriate gap-toothed grin on its face.

Love your take on this watch. Killer features most will never make use of, but when you love something, reason doesn't always apply.

Thanks for the review!

Absolutely. The hobby is all about appreciating details and design choices, and this watch exemplifies that for me.
