Funny Story from District Time

When I was at the District Time Watch Show last Sunday, I spent more than a few minutes at Eugene Stohlman's table, admiring the various versions of his watch called the Earl, a 39mm sterling silver, rhodium plated dress watch.

As I have detailed in other posts, I had to choose between a modest purchase in a Balt Pilot Worldtimer from TSAO Baltimore and one of Eugene's Earls. I ultimately decided on the Balt Pilot, but I did end up going back to Eugene's table to get my bracelet resized.

The whole time I was talking to him and the whole time that he was resizing the bracelet on my Balt Pilot, I kept thinking to myself that I'd met Eugene somewhere before. But I ultimately dismissed it and left happily with my new watch and thoughts that I would definitely keep E. Stohlman Watch Co. on my radar.

Fast forward to last night, and I am posting on the Christopher Ward Forum about the show, and someone mentions that Eugene used to work at a local watch shop in the area. And that's when the lightning hit! Eugene and his uncle ran the Watch Pocket in Silver Spring Maryland, which is less than a mile down the road from where I used to live! I'd stop in a few times a year to look at their vintage watches and a few years ago, I bought a G-Shock from them. I had learned a while back that Eugene had gotten another job making watches elsewhere, but I didn't learn more than that. I can't believe I didn't make the connection at District Time!

Really cool to see that Eugene is making his own watches, and they're beauties! I'll be really focused on what E. Stohlman does from here on out!
