Twin Sons of Different Watchmakers

I have made two fortunate eBay vintage purchases. You may have seen my recent posts of successfully servicing the Vantage (left.)

The Grant (right) wasn’t running when I got it and the hands collided when trying to set it. Opening the case revealed a movement quite askew. Once repositioned correctly the hands freed up and it began to run. In fact, it runs nearly 36 hours on a wind. It runs so well, I reopened it just to regulate it. It was losing about two minutes a day. Now seems to gain about 15-20 sec/day.

It’s running so well, I don’t plan to service it. The crystal has a big crack about half the diameter long. I’m beginning to think whatever cracked the crystal jarred the movement so far it bound up and the owner tossed in a drawer. If it happened early in its life, then the movement may not have seen much wear at all.

As strong as it’s running, I’m inclined to wear it as is. It may slow or stop someday soon and I can service it when that happens. In the meantime, I’ll proudly display its scar and share its story.

The only issue you may run into is extra wear and tare on the movement. It may be running strong but if it is that old the oils will have dried up. Just pay attention to how it is running. It is cool very cool watch.

I appreciate the advice. I expect it’ll need service but won’t attempt it until it’s symptomatic. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” 😉
