Will watch lovers boycott Philips auctions?

Do you think watch people will boycott Philips auctions since they are owned by the Russians?  (Useful for the owners for money laundering)

I hope everyone else boycotts Philips, so that at the next auction I can buy a $1M watch for $10!!!

Will these same people boycott Chinese business should China invade Taiwan? It would be interesting to see how dedicated they are to these notions of morality and justice when it affects nearly all the products they consume

The idea of boycotting people and companies of a particular nation is so strange to me.  It's a set of government officials who pursue a set of policies and military actions, NOT the citizens or companies of that country.

I mean there are literally 831,673 different actions the U.S. government undertakes every single day at the behest of particular officials that I vehemently oppose.  It is ridiculous to think that a French person might hate me and boycott my company, because the American President decided to do X, Y,  or Z.  WTF do I have to do with what an idiot American President or the 535 morons in the U.S. Congress decide to do?  Thus, why would I hate other human beings who happen to be living in Russia for the actions of particular officials in that country?

Regardless, I do sincerely hope that others do irrationally boycott Russian stuff - that way I can buy that same stuff at a great discount - especially Russian vodka.  I love me some Russian Vodka!

Where do you draw the line then? And why?

Disown Russian friends? Fire Russian employees? Deport all Russians? Russiaphobia is alive…

To the last 3 posts... Thank you!

The relationship between businesses and the countries they operate in is not always as loose as in a traditional western capitalist system, so it can make sense to make that connection, eg. between the Russian state and businesses owned by Russian oligarchs.

I have seen quite a few weird emotional reactions along these lines that made no sense on reflection, e.g. ditching Dostoyevsky from a literature course. On the other hand, dismissing all of this just as Russian-phobic is a convenient excuse to do nothing and carry on as if nothing has happened.

You may not be in a position to do anything. That's ok, no need for vacuous virtue-signalling of your sentiments. But maybe you can do just a wee bit that could - when amplified by many like-minded people - impact on the comfort of the war machine, then it is worth considering.

All true.  I think the idea is to motivate the civilians in that country to pressure their government.  However, I’m not sure that works in russia.

You know, I'm of the mind that "I'm not sure that works in the U.S."  😢

My wife always says, "How in the world did you become so cynical?"  My response is:  "Who's being cynical?  I'm being realistic."

It's a fair point but there is a very close relationship between oligarchs and Putin almost inevitably.  So if you go after an oligarch it's not really going after a random Russian.

The oligarchs are typically part of how Putin hides his own wealth.
