Advice on this Tag Heuer 2000. Ref 173.006

Hello all! I’m new here. I’d love to hear your advice on and experience with these types of watches.

see, I’m Looking for a special watch to celebrate turning 40. Something many people close to me never got to experience. So I’m looking for a watch around 1500 Euros at max. I already own a Tudor Hydronaut 2, a Zodiac topper crystal limited gmt, some g shocks and a Bulova computron.

I saw this Tag new with papers and box from a dealer on chrono. And they said they would accept 1250 euro for it.

I don’t own a chrono and most are often too big, too ugly ( my view ), too expensive or quartz. These tag 2000 models I actually like the look off. However I don’t have the knowledge or in hand experience with the models. So all I’ve gone by a pictures..

So is it worth the price ? Anyone owned them and can drop some knowledge.

What I love is the size, the dupois module, the case being Matt and less prone to scratches, the face is also handsome. The dislikes are well it’s an old model, the champagne bezel might be too much, not sure there. It would be a daily wear that can be dressed up or down. Since I don’t have such a watch in my collection yet

The movement used is an ETA 2892 with a Dubois Depraz 2000 chronograph module mated to it. (Source: https://www.tagheuer.com/us/en/vintage-collection/tag-heuer-2000-series.html). It's a commonly used enough solution to know that it will provide reliable, accurate service with two pain points: (1) the chrono pushers won't be in the same plane as the crown (because the chronograph is on a module); and (2) services are going to be PRICEY. Provided you can live with that, you should be fine.

As for the price, it's not cheap, but then, neither are most Swiss Made chronos.

Thank you, was aware of the Dubois part. Servicing being pricey scared me. Especially when I can’t even get to see it in the metal. What would service cost be on these circa? And is it doable by any watchmaker or one of those that will be troublesome to service.

Thanks again !

Love the Look of this bicolor Tag 2000 models!

If I'm not mistaken, the Dubois Depraz 2000 ist a Chronograph -module similar to that used in the Speedmaster Reduced.

Servicing can indeed be tricky.

A friend of mine owns a Speedmaster Reduced and strongly advised to look for a watchmaker up front a purchase who is willing and capable to service this type of movements. He paid around 500€ for a service of his Speedmaster Reduced by an Independent watchmaker, but he got quotes up to 750€.

Damn… I think I’d be better off stretching budget and going for another truly lovely chrono. Nivada Grenchen Chronomaster at 1800. This has a more serviceable movement.

I was also very interested in a Speedmaster Reduced, especially the bicolour version.

For one thing, the smaller size fits better on my wrist and the price (under 2000€) is very tempting.

But the whole service issue has always kept me from buying.

Nivada Grenchen has a really beautiful chronograph in its programme with the Chronomaster. I like the Broad Arrow - Tropical Dial version very much.

Which one is your favourite?

Mine is actually the orange boy! It has no text in the bottom of the dial giving it a more vintage look.
