A very common watch with a very personal story
Like so many of us, the SKX was a gateway into mechanical watches. It's a great watch, outdated but still so incredible charming. Also my model was at the watchmaker several times, because unlike the description on the dial suggests it isn't water resistant and fogged up everytime I took it in the water after Ihad the gaskets changed. Anyway's I still love it, and here's the story why...
End of 2019 I had dreamed about the SKX for years. As a poor student I couldn't imagine buying a watch for 300 Euro, at the time almost a monthly salary for me. And of course like so many people here I talk to my friends and girlfriend so much that they too were now experts of the history of this watch, even if they never ask to.
But in 2019 it got discontinued and I couldn't find a single shop which had it in stock. That was till I visited the parents of my girlfriend. They lived in a very small town which has one juweler. And thre it was, laying in the window, but I didn't had the money. So with every visit to her parents I also visited the watch.
Right before my 21th birthday I finally had the money, always fearing the watch wasn't there anymore I was determined that the next visit I would finally get it.
My girlfriend was at her parents some days before I arrived. She picked me up from the trainstaition. I urged her to first visit the shop, she tried to convince me otherwise. But I wouldn't let loose. When we arrived, it was still there. But, before I could go in, she stopped me and told me, that all my friends, her parents and mine threw the money together to buy it for me. She just didn't know the model anymore.
I think you can imagine the smile in my face when I tried it on for the first time, got it sized and she payed for it. I still had to wait till my birthday, but the excitement was magical.
To this day, this was the most incredible gift I have ever gotten. I still remember the feeling I had every time I put it on.

Sometimes you're able to find them used on Ebay for about 250 Euro, but NOS the prices are redicules! If you really want one, I would say buy used. It only gets better with dings and scratches 😁 servicing is also not that expensive.
Great story! The SKX is an amazing watch and you have a great memory attached. The SKX was the 3rd automatic I bought almost 20 years ago and I’ll never sell it. It’s a classic for sure. Congrats!
