Jobs in the Watchmaking Industry

Hello, watch nerds! I've got a question maybe some of you fellas have wondered too.

What are some good job options to look for if you're interested in watches? Do you need any preparation? If so, how can you get one? I personally love writing but I know the field is pretty slim in terms of good opportunities out there.

I would love to hear your suggestions and personal experiences on this matter!

Considering I’m in a career pivot…comment for following.  Haven’t looked into it much myself yet as commissioned sales of watches doesn’t interest me, not sure what else there is in the states outside of watchmaker

I have nothing constructive to share…

Just that they are old fashioned and big on paper, so mailrooms across Switzerland should exist in abundance.

Bad humor aside, if writing it’s your interest then I would think in editorial terms.

Think of brands that have editorial arms i.e. a self published magazine (big brands, but very well staffed with people with a lot of editorial experience, think Omega).

Or publications focused on the watch industry that editorial is their primary business (publications you likely already consume if you’re into watches).

If you’re really into it, go for it nevertheless and stress test it here WC or by sending it spontaneously to editors in those publications.

Good luck!

I agree, writing is probably not the safest or best-paying job within the watch industry. Maybe some have their own creative dept. for ad writing, graphics, or design, but my guess is they outsource most of that to agencies.

That leaves retail, admin, or tech. I'd probably try and find a job in retail first, as a shop clerk maybe, to sniff out the watch world from there (would also look good on your resume later). For admin, you need at least basic office skills I guess, and for tech ... you gotta learn to become a watchmaker :)

There's also the indie way - found a brand, do freelance designs, or become a specialist for rare skills (say, enamel dials, or pin-pallet repair). And of course all of us here need a good watchmaker around the corner :)
