Grandpas 50's Girard-Perragaux

So I just picked up what used to be my Grandpas daily driver from its first ever Service. It is my first heirlroom piece and I love it! It is a little mysterious though. The watchmaker told me it houses an unmarked inhouse GP Caliber. Maybe some of yall know more?

Great looking watch

Thanks

Beautiful GP. Unfortunately, GP is well known for not putting many identifiers on their classic watches. I did some looking and you do have an unusual piece. As there’s no ‘GP’ logo, I think this likely from the early ‘50’s, but I’m not sure. I assume it’s a manual wind?

Thanks for the Info! Yes its manually wound and has what I assume to be 18000 vph. And youre correct: There is no GP Logo on the watch itself. Didn't know you could date it just because of the abscence of the Logo

You’re welcome. So you’ll know why I’m saying this, I’ve seen no logo GPs from the late ‘40’s with different fonts than yours and late ‘50s models with very similar fonts to yours but they have logos. So, I’m guessing early ‘50s from that.

GPs are a bit cryptic, but the hunt is fun!

Guess you never stop learning... If only i hat taken Photos of the movement. Even my local watchmaker was cluesless about the movement and he also stated that threre is very little to be known about vintage GPs like this

That is a very fine representation of GP watches that were sold in the North American market during the middle to late 1950s. I came across quite a few when I started collecting seriously in the 80s. Wearing a vintage watch was a fashion trend started by the usual suspects in Manhattan unlike Europeans who have a long history with historical things. The guy that was my seller would ruthlessly have dials redone to make the old watches appear new. Apparently it was not unusual for GP watches to be completely unmarked or dial signed but not the movement which probably was a generic movement that GP sourced. Everything was mix and match after all wristwatches were a relatively new affectation. The industry was feeling its way during the early years. My info is not researched just from my personal history in the hobby and a willingness to learn and listen.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! That watch did never See the American Continent though. My Grandpa got it in switzerland after getting his first Job there. He has never been to the US. This watch also has never been touched by anybody. It still had its first mainspring which unfortunatley let down on me.
