The diver dilemma

I have a major dilemma that haunts me constantly in this hobby. The dive watch…. My favorite type of watch. However the watch that is most difficult to get right.

In short…. Misalignment bezels. This is the embodiment of what the dive watch is. Naturally other watches can have high water resistance. However, the rotating dive time bezel is the most identifiable feature of a dive watch.

This mechanism and/or complication is almost misaligned whenever I get a diver. This is something that I just cannot shake off. If I know it is misaligned and I can’t manually align it, it is something I cannot live with. So time after time, a new design comes out that I absolutely cannot live without and I get the watch. Beautiful finishing, amazing proportions, minute and hour hand alignments…… but then the bezel is a ratchet into place style and not a friction ratchet like a Seiko, Steinhart, or my HGP. These watches allow you to manually adjust the bezel and it is stiff enough that it will stay centered for the most part. But most divers don’t have this style. Making the ability to get it perfectly aligned not possible without trying to remove a bezel which I’ve never had success with and have damaged watches in the past while trying…

Ultimately, I’m left with the delimma. I either try again to get a diver and know that it’s a 1/100 chance that I get one that does meet my standards. The other heartbreaking option is to stop trying to get dive watches and not enjoy what is my favorite type of watch and feel unfulfilled as a watch hobbyist.

Am I the only one that has this feeling? Am I along in my hyper focused attention to detail that doesn’t allow me to be ok with almost there?

It's something that genuinely doesn't bother me in the slightest - but I'm an Omega owner & they have notoriously shite bezel action. 🤣👍🏻
