001: The Psychology Of Collection [Introduction]

As an avid watch collector and a proud storefront owner, I have had the privilege of witnessing the deep fascination that these stunning pieces of craftsmanship can inspire. I have marveled at the exquisite artistry, reveled in the historical narratives, and reveled in the sheer beauty of the timepieces I have encountered. Yet, as my collection grew and my store flourished, I found myself captivated by more than just the tangible qualities of these timekeepers.

This journey has led me to explore the psychological underpinnings of watch collecting. Why do we ascribe such immense value to these small, ticking objects? What drives us to pursue, acquire, and treasure these pieces that, functionally, do little more than tell time? In essence, what lies at the heart of our fascination with watches?

In the series of articles that follow, I aim to delve into these intriguing questions. Drawing from psychological theories and sociological concepts, I will attempt to unravel the complex interplay of emotions, behaviors, and social phenomena that shape the world of watch collecting.

We'll begin by examining the 'Endowment Effect,' which illuminates why we value the watches we own more than those we don’t. We'll then tread on the 'Hedonic Treadmill,' exploring the relentless pursuit for the 'next piece,' a pursuit that often leaves satisfaction just out of reach.

From there, we will venture into the realm of 'Conspicuous Consumption,' looking at how the luxury status and high cost of wristwatches play into our purchasing decisions. We will then confront the struggle between 'Desire and Responsibility,' exploring the cognitive dissonance that occurs when our passion for collecting collides with the call for financial prudence.

Finally, we will contemplate our relationship with time itself, inspired by a timeless piece of wisdom from the Bible, "Making the best use of the time, because the days are evil." Here, we will reflect on the ephemeral nature of our existence, the intrinsic value of moments, and the importance of building a lasting legacy beyond the material world.

As a passionate collector and store owner, my insights will be drawn from personal experiences, customer interactions, and a deep love for the art of horology. The aim is not just to understand why we collect watches, but to explore how this understanding can help us derive more satisfaction, joy, and meaning from our shared passion.

I welcome you to join me on this exploration, to understand the psychology that ticks beneath the gleaming surfaces and intricate mechanisms of our cherished collections. I believe that, in understanding these concepts, we can learn to better appreciate our passions, our choices, and the fleeting, precious nature of time itself. This, indeed, will be time well spent.

Thank you! I've been on this topic for a few years now, at the end I'll also give a list of book references that people can read as to where I got most of my analysis

Sounds very interesting! Looking forward to this. Some of my watch assortment has been gifts or inheritance and I’m also interested in the sentimental value that these watches gather over time.
