Question about my new Ball watch

Hey Guys.

I hope this is the correct place for this question, I’m pretty new here. I got myself the fireman enterprise not long ago and I’m really happy with how it feels and wears. But it sat on my shelf for more than 24h, and I wanted to wind it a little because I plan to wear it tomorrow, so I don’t have to reset it. But the winding feels really stiff, like there is a lot of resistance. Only the winding, setting the time felt smooth. Is this normal with ball? I stopped winding right away, as I don’t want to cause any damage.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, stop winding once you meet resistance!

You can break the watch if you over wind it.

Agreed, I assumed that this was NOT an automatic since he encountered resistance. If this is an auto, just wear the watch for a while and it’ll wind itself

·

Are you near your AD? You can have them double check it.

I had a Ball watch before and it would do the same thing. Some days I couldn’t hand wind and other days winding was smooth. I’m pretty sure it’s the Sellita movements they use! Of course it can’t hurt to have your AD check it out, but I wouldn’t stress just don’t try to hand wind when you meet the resistance and do a couple “skx shuffles” to get it going

No I’m pretty far away, I’ll have to send it in.

I just got up, and tried it again. Like I said I didn’t wear it yesterday and now overnight there shouldn’t be much power left, but it still winds really hard. I’ll write my dealer. Thanks.

What about a local watchmaker? They should be able tell you if it need looking at further from winding it.

There was an old family owned business in my town that sadly closed only a few months ago and the next one I know of is almost an hours drive away and my car‘s starter is acting dodgy. I got Tuesday off from work, so I’ve got time to take the public transport then. I feel kind of awkward to walk into a local store with a product I’ve bought online though.

Sorry to hear about the closure and car problems. What about friends/acquaintances that know about watches? As for the store I would not let the location of my purchase hinder me. I would look at it a test drive for when I needed a service or repair in the future. I meet my watchmaker at a local watch meetup and have had him look at watches, took service work to him as well as a clock service.

I don’t know anyone that uses anything other than quartz or smart watches. I got into watches because I was fascinated by the pocket watch my great grandfather left behind. Thanks for the advice :)

Would love to see more photos of the pocket watch.

I only have this video on my phone, sadly it doesn’t show the dial.

I have a couple of Ball watches. They have great designs and the tritium lume is interesting, but movement quality varies. One of mine took two warranty trips to work well, now works like a charm. As I’m pretty sure you have an automatic, if it’s keeping good time, I’d leave it sit for 3-4 days to really let it unwind before making a judgement. That said, I’d agree with the above posts that your local watch place would likely love the business to look the watch over. I have one I use for that. He knows he carries a limited selection, but appreciates my coming in for batteries (yes, I own manuals and quartz!), strap changes (I’m not good at getting bracelets off without scratching something) and general questions.
