Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic “Jaws” Watch

This is a really interesting watch! This is the Alsta Nautoscaph Superautomatic as worn by Richard Dreyfuss when he played Matt Hooper in the 1975 movie Jaws! The watch has been lovingly reengineered and reissued with a limited edition of 1,975 pieces (this is #473). It has all the modern attributes including sapphire glass and the proven Seiko NH35A automatic movement with 24 jewels and 41 hr reserve. It sits beautifully on the wrist and I love the retro bracelet in 316L stainless steel, a great addition to the collection.

I appreciate movie-related connections to certain watches. How did you learn about this watch and the brand? What about the re-issue spoke to you?

I looked at this watch a few times. I never knew about it then a year ago when  some YouTuber mentioned it. I honestly don't know why it is rarely mentioned when people are discussing movie watches. Jaws is such a classic. I guess the mechanical shark commands such a presence that no one notices wrist watches lol.

It looks great on you!

I lusted after this for a long time, and the limited gilt version, but when I finally got to try it on it just didn't fit right on my wrist sadly 😔.

I’ve always been a fan of the original movie. I watched a YouTube video telling the story of this Scottish businessman who was also a watch collector. He had the opportunity to buy the Alsta name and all the old tooling etc to remake the watches to their authentic original spec (obviously they used a more modern movement). I was fascinated by it all and wanted one, there was one large dealer in UK selling them.

I agree, not sure why they don’t get mentioned more. Not sure how many of the 1,975 are left available?

Did you try it with the rubber strap?

I’ve never seen this watch before, but I really like it, and I might just have to buy one.

No, I didn't actually, just the metal bracelet. Does it wear quite differently on the strap?

It's at the upper limit on what I'll spend on a watch so decided not to pull the trigger. I'll likely regret that decision in the future and won't be the first time lol. Great watch with some talking points and I love the bracelet. Wear it with pride my friend.

Isn't this the model with something like a 54mm Lu-to-lug?

No it’s only 38mm so with the cushion case it’s no more than a 42mm but it wears on the small side

You might find it sits better as the rubber/material strap drops from the sides

Now I remember, it is over 15mm THICK.

I really wanted to like this watch due to my utter fear of bathtubs and pools after seeing Jaws as a kid, but it was the height and the fact it was ~&1K for a NH35.

Great looking watch but could have been so much better.

Wonder whatever happened to the one worn in the movie?
