Watch box build

I’ve been designing a watch box in my head over the last few weeks that I intend to start building (relatively) soon.  (Woodworking and watches as hobbies aren’t kind to the wallet)  I’m thinking a glass(plexi) top with 8-12 slots, and a small drawer underneath to store straps, tools etc.

One question I have is the dividers, is a hard wood like walnut/maple okay? My first thought is no and to line with a cloth.

Anything that you’d add/remove?

Pic for attention but here is the general idea, but made of walnut not MDF, with some more woodworking details I won’t bore you with.

I think of the slots are more than wide enough for your watches the dividers could be hardwood without any issues.

I was thinking scratches but wasn’t sure, thanks for input!

Sounds great.

Here are some ideas that might help them sell (if that's your goal).

  • Extra strong glass for safety of kids and pets. And the watches.
  • Attachment at the back so it can be tied so it can't fall off the desk.
  • Optional built in LEDs? You'd have to ask and see if people like that. I personally wouldn't but I'm not the type of person who needs one of these. I only have 3 watches.
  • I would like to see one where the straps just slot in. I think wrapping them around the cushions every day is a pain in the butt.
  • A premium travel size case for guys who want to travel but still want the premium feel of wood. Rounded corners so it goes nicely into a bag. And no glass I suppose.

And yes fabric is a good choice. There are a lot of issues with the leather industry. Much of it is cats and dogs from China which is the world's biggest producer of leather. And many other problems.

Softer materials cannot scratch harder materials through friction, and I'm not aware of any wood that is harder than any common watch metal (maybe Ironwood vs Bronze?). So I don't think you'll have to worry about scratches if you decide not to add fabric or leather.

That being said, I think fabric lining makes for a more "upscale" finished appearance, and it will certainly be quieter.

Thanks for the ideas. I tend To not sell my wood working as it instantly becomes work and takes most the fun from it.
