Gifting watches

Has anyone gifted a watch to someone who is not into watches? My brother is turning 40 next month and I want to give him a decent watch. He has no interest and only wears an Apple Watch. However, his job does not allow smart watches for certain tasks and there is nothing cool about wearing a smart watch in public. He is also a fairly new father and I feel like he is finally a grownup.

He loves blue and he is left handed, so I am thinking that the Seiko SSK003 is a good fit with the 4 o’clock crown. I would probably also get him a blue Velcro strap so he could play guitar without fear of damaging his precious axes.

My other options were Tissot Gentleman or a Christopher Ward Sealander, but I think those would be lost on him.

I am wondering if he will appreciate it or if I am just forcing my interests on him (I am big brother after all).

Should I do it?

Get him a boomerang watch. A boomerang watch is any watch you love that can be regifted back to you for Christmas.

Gifts, especially ones given by loved ones, are just that gifts. If he doesn't like it, he'll still appreciate the gesture.

Also Google up destro or left hand crown watches, there are some out there that don't cost thousands.

Even some Chinese brands, IxDAO in particular, have blue dialed left hand drive watches. Granted black will be more prevalent.

The SSK GMT is a great watch too btws. Really liking their grey dial, blue/red combo they just released.

I think you are forcing your interest on him and I must admit I am guilty of that too with my little brother. 😂

It's a great gift idea nonetheless. Is there any way you could secretly enquire about how he would feel about receiving a mechanical watch? Ask the wife maybe?

You also mentioned guitars. Does he play a right-handed guitar while being left-handed?

PS: an effect pedal is also a good gift idea for a guitar player. They're the straps of the guitar world, we love having a variety of them.

Lol this made me chuckle dude.

Know your audience. I bought a Seiko5 SNK years ago for my cousin on his 16th bday and have never seen him wear it. I gifted my wife 2 watches this year (Tissot and Nomos) and she wears them when she wants to feel fancy. Otherwise she’s an Apple Watcher.

Yes absolutely you should do it!!

Ive gifted maybe half a dozen watches over the years, I find it almost as satisfying as buying for myself (with the caveat that I've had my Grail for 3 years).

Only had one back, that was one I bought for my Dad that he wore for a few weeks then decided it was too expensive so wanted to sell it (I bought it back, but he bought my Mrs a car with the money).

Replaced one I bought a good mate, he broke a quartz I got him for his 50th so I gave him an Alpinist reissue which he loves.

Gifting watches has even got a couple of mates into the hobby too, which at least gives me someone to talk to about watches in real life.

TLDR- just get him it 😉👍👍

The gifts we tend to give are the gifts we wanna receive. That's why my girlfriend gets power tools and screwdriver sets as gifts.

My brother gifted me a SKX007 and I’ve been down this rabbit hole ever since. As a left handed SSK003 owner, ABSOLUTELY gift it to him but have no expectations thereafter. Personally not a fan of Destro crowns.

Oh for sure. I would give him something that I would wear, haha.

Yes he plays right hand as a lefty, so a watch would scrape the body. Getting him anything guitar related would be very tricky; each of his guitars is worth about as much as a Black Bay 58.

Gave one to my nephew about 7 years ago, he's never worn it.
