This simple date complication Antarctic is perhaps one of the more humble Nivada models for Mid-Century Monday. There are many other models like the Wanderer, Chronomaster, Depthmaster and Super Antarctic that are more desirable among collectors but we all start somewhere when we tumble down the vintage rabbit hole. Nivada is one of the many originally Swiss watch companies with a storied yet convoluted history including a return to Swiss manufacturing in 2018 after stints with owners in South Korea and Mexico. They can be found variously branded as Croton Nivada, Croton Nivada Grenchen, Croton and simply Nivada depending on era and distributor. Like many other watch companies Nivada touted their participation in extreme exploration and watches based on their Aquamatic model accompanied Admiral Robert Byrd to the South Pole during Operation Deep Freeze from 1955 to 1956. This achievement became a frequent theme in their advertising.

Classy Jack, love the crystal and strap.

Love this one, Jack!

Lovely.

Nivada were all over the place with model names in their later years in the 70s. For example a model branded one year as "Antarctic Sea" is a simple anonymous "Automatic" a year later.
