Shower thoughts on watches and ... aliens?
For the Crunchies who are not familiar with the meme: a "shower thought" is a thought that came to you in a state of relaxation (for some reason, the shower seems to be a preferred place for that), where your mind just sorta aimlessly drifts along, hopping the rails of the association train. Well, here's a fun one that I had recently and just had to share :)
Now. Suppose an outer space alien being finds a watch. Whether on a devastated planet Earth or just floating in space, lost by an astronaut, or shot up by a billionaire, I'll leave to your imagination. If that alien got some intelligence going, it'll probably figure out quickly this is a simple time-telling device from a primitive civilization. And if the watch has numbers on the dial, it can now figure out our numbers and number system! Of course it can't if the watch only has a 12-3-6-9 dial. And here's the kicker: The alien can figure out the numeral writing system even from a 12-3-6-9 . . . if it's in Roman numerals !!!
... at least up to 39. Still, good reason to ditch that Explorer. Thank you for your attention :)
So now we have Russell’s watch floating in space along with his teapot? Send a California dial up there to really confuse them.
You should check out the YouTube channel Isaac Arthur. It's all about alien theory and futurism concepts etc. Very thought provoking but different from the standard "look at the UFO" channels.
