Review of the Longines Zulu Time 42mm Anthracite Green

Well, I've had this for about a 10 months now so I think it's time for a review.

So, I had a Grand Seiko SBGN005 that I loved (and still do) but wanted a "flyer" mechanical GMT.

At the time I had a Lorier Hyperion Gen 1 and a Glycine Airman DC4. Both good watches but no flyers. In 2022 I saw the Zulu Time launch and was interested. I decided to wait a year as I had recently bought an Omega SMP 300 in black and a Damasko DC-86.

So fast forward to March 2023 and I get the 42mm Zulu Time in.... Black. After about a week I realized I had "dun goofed". I quickly sold it on eBay and purchased the Anthracite and Green Zulu Time.

What can I say that others haven't, it's SO GOOD especially for the price.

You get a rock solid Chronometer grade movement with silicon components and a 72 HOUR power reserve.

You get 3 lovely bezel colors and three different dials with different colors and finishes.

The leather straps on offer are excellent and come with the outstanding tool less micro adjustable clasps.

100 meters of water resistance are good enough for anything except diving.

The Arabic numerals are filled with lume and are 3-D from the dial. All hands are also lume filled and look handsome. The dial also has a shiny metal ring between the minute track and the main part of the dial, adding yet another 3-D element.

The bezels are all handsome and the green one is a chameleon (hehe) as it goes from nearly black to a LOVELY British racing green in sunlight. The "24 hour" induce on the bezel is lumed, every other indice on the bezel unlumed.

However, not all is perfect.

The bracelet, while looking nice with excellent articulation, has a few issues.

On the 42mm Zulu Time, the bracelet's male end links make it ungainly if your wrist is under ~7.25 inches and actually unwearable if your wrist is under 6.5 inches.

It also has no tool less micro adjust (Longines corporate, if you're reading this, FIND A WAY to put the HYDROCONQUEST GMT clasp on the Zulu time please 🥺🥺)

The 42mm has rather long looking lugs (49mm) that don't curve down towards the wrist much making them seem longer than some watches with 50mm lug to lug measurements.

Particular to the Anthracite and Green model, the GMT hand is gilt instead of being a fun color like in the Blue and Black models, which have Orange and Blue GMT hands, respectively. Why not a burgundy?

Now for the last issue, if you can call it that..... The existence of the 39mm model. My left wrist maxes out at 7-7.1 inches depending on salt intake, heat and fitness levels. When it's extremely cold it can go down to just under 7 inches, let's say 6.8 inches. So now I have a very viable option of I want to wear a Zulu Time on the bracelet..... However that'll be another post.

So, on conclusion, the Zulu Time is the BEST GMT buy for under $3500 and over $2000 on the market today. Heck a nice AD can get you out the door on the bracelet or strap for under $3,000 ALL DAY.

Hope y'all enjoyed this.

Nice one. ☻

It's certainly the pick of the colour ways, I like how the bezel goes from almost black to green depending on the light and the gilt hand set is stunning (unlike you I like the colour of the GMT hand).

I agree Longines could work on their bracelets, they could do with a greater taper and some micro adjust on the clasp but the finishing, link size and articulation is spot on. When I bought my Spirit I decided to spring for the Prestige Edition with the quick change bracelet and extra straps - glad I did too. It's great taking it off the bracelet and onto the nato in about a minute without a tool.

My wrist is large (20cm / 7.75in) and flat so those long Longines lugs and male end-links actually work for me. I've hardly worn anything else in the 4 or so months since I picked it up.

Think I'll pick up an Ultra Chron next too - that's a very impressive watch. Like the Zulu Time, it's the best diver on the market for the money.

That'll make 3 of my last 4 purchases from the brand - and I have a sneaking suspicion that they'll release something this year that I'll like too.

I own the same 42mm piece and I truly agree of what you said. Awesome review! ⭐️
