Zelos is one of the reasons why I'll probably never buy from Seiko again.

I love the watches made by Seiko, but not the one they are making today. The present Seiko is boring and is focused on launching countless "save the whatever" unlimited limited editions and staying in the comfort zone of selling us the same same over and over again. Gone are the days when Seiko did its things differently and was not afraid to innovate. The best quote I received in a reply from last year summarized it the best: Seiko is the reason I won't buy a Seiko again.

The interesting stuff is now happening elsewhere, and one of these places is home to Zelos. I took a leap of faith when I bought online my bronze Horizons GMT and I still think that it was one of my better purchases of that year.

Zelos was not afraid to shoot for a compact GMT (it's one of the few sub 40mm GMT that I found), and crammed it full of nice things, such as impeccable polish - which is very rare to find on a bronze finish, an Elaboré grade ETA 2893 movement, a beautiful cobalt blue sunburst dial that reflect the gilt indices, a framed date window, a nicely signed crown, etcetera etcetera, and all this for a price that was very affordable at launch.

If there is anything negative about Zelos in general and my Horizons in particular it's the limited production numbers leading to a free for all brawl on launch days and that the Horizons isn't the best at being a GMT due to the lack of contrast of the bezel.

I can live with this, which is something I find difficult to say about the modern day Seiko.

Personally I like Seiko's conservative styling - I can see the value for money in the specs of Zelos but have yet to find one that floats my boat as they're all a bit brash to the point of looking a bit cheap and tacky. I'm not into bling, especially on a tool watch.

But I am over 50...

Well I'm over 60 and I would prefer to catch the pox rather than being saddled with yet another yawn inspiring Prostate watch with a plodding slowbeat unregulated movement.
