There's definitely a hype element about these watches. However, I really love the design. It's something that you can't get from any other manufacturer. It's not a homage and the build quality is really excellent
All popular watches have some amount of hype to them, but it’s not hyped by some marketing machine but by enthusiasts. The hype seems justified since very few hit the 2ndry market. I picked up my first Ming 37.07, and I am looking forward to it.
