Then there is a framed window, often used as a window to give the dial some balance, especially with applied indices/digits. Thanks - that was not the term I have heard though, which may have been chamfered. Could have also been something French-sounding.

Chamfered edge is also correct, it's like indexes vs. indices vs. markers, a matter of preference.
