Captain’s Log 002 - Oris Hank Aaron

Quick recap of the past couple of months:

Went to the AD a couple of times and fell in love with the Grand Seiko Shunbun, bought a Casio A1100 and really contemplating on getting an Alpinist SBDC159.

Onto my entry for the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Hank Aaron Editon. Long name. OBCPDHA LE. Yea, acronyms don’t work.

Anyway, I bought the Hank Aaron on a whim during my Hawaii anniversary trip in 2023. Went to the Ben Bridge and saw it on display. I’ve heard about the Roberto Clemente LE, but didn’t think much of it. I was initially looking for a white Seiko Sharp Edge, but when my wife and I saw the Hank Aaron, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I tried to do some mental gymnastics and talk myself out of it because I don’t even follow baseball! I initially set a budget for myself - $1k, enough to buy the Sharp Edge. We did see one at the Macy’s in the same mall, but it stopped tickling my fancy. So, we kept walking around. Trying to get it out of my mind until my wife said, “I’ll pay the difference.” She liked it so much that she would help fund the purchase 🥹. I vividly remember sitting in the food court trying to make a decision. Will I regret passing it up? I can’t sell it if I do buy it. It would have to be a forever watch. Do I even like it that much? I have been looking for a white dial. Ben Bridge is my AD and it’ll go on my record. These were the thoughts going through my head. It must have been because we were on vacation and the fact that my wife liked it so much, we decided to pull the trigger. Before I knew it, I walked out of the shop with it on my wrist and a baseball in my pocket. (It came with a “signed” baseball 😂)

Here it is at the AD before purchasing.

And here it is after purchasing. Switched it to the nato because Hawaii is humid and I was sweaty. Didn’t want to mess up the leather strap.

Fast forward half a year later - this watch catches the most attention out of all the watches I wear. Easily one of my favorite watches that I own, next to the BB58. Between those two, they could be my two watch collection. But thats crazy talk.

I love how the crystal makes the number indices look like its floating. Something I can’t capture via camera. The bright white opaline dial helps the red and blue pop. The pointer date complication is really unique from your typical watch design. Something I appreciate as I’m not typically a fan of date windows. Especially at the 3 oclock location. It is my first watch with a Sellita 200 movement. I’ll definitely have to do follow up reviews on the reliability in the coming years. Although, I’m glad if it ever needed servicing, I don’t necessarily have to send it back to Oris.

Overall, super happy with this watch! I am excited to see what other baseball limited editions Oris releases in the future. Anyone else own a pointer date? I’d love to see pictures!
