Quartz Watches: Past, Present, But No Future?

Quill & Pad

Nothing can stir up the watch world these days quite as much the launch of a new Apple watch. For some it's a must-have gadget, for others it just isn't a real watch. But quartz watches face perhaps more competition from smartwatches than mechanical watches. Does quartz even have a real future? I'm finding that manufacturers just don't make mid-range quartz timepieces anymore😭. There is very little to be had between $100 -$1000 by way of a quartz piece that is comparable in aesthetic and materials of automatics in the same price range (Notwithstanding that most good mid-range chronographs are quartz). Anything below $100.⁰⁰... ok let's say $50.⁰⁰ is usually plastic rubbish and anything over $1000.⁰⁰ fills a niche and usually starts at well above $1000.⁰⁰

#seiko could do us all a favour by bringing back the high quality quartz divers of the 1980s. Start reissuing those and I'm fairly certain they could quench people's thirst for an SKX while not charging quite as much as the "new" Seiko5 models💰💰.

They could also make a less bling-y cal. 9F and bang it into some #presage pieces and/or add the cal. 7C46 to more prospex models. I would definitely pick up a #kingturtle with a 7C46 for $150.⁰⁰ less than the automatic version.
