Is "Novelties" the new "Colorways"?

I had never heard the phrase colorway until about a year ago, when seemingly every horological YouTuber started using it-- at around the same time. This year, the hot noun is novelties, which seems to mean, slight variations on older models.

Does anyone know how these phrases first got applied to watches? Does it have something to do with Watches and Wonders?
