Post #25 Yahoo Japan auction “freight”

I was flicking through Yahoo Japan’s auction site and discovered a Rolex Daytona 18K gold with original box and papers. The max bid price was approximately US$250,000 at that time. The funny thing was that on the bottom of the page it said “freight to be paid by recipient on delivery”. Even if this was to be shipped from the USA, the freight would have been a mere fraction of the total transaction amount. Come on! Couldn’t have this be “freight to be paid at source” or something?

Japan is not a county where free shipping is common practice for e-commerce. On the other hand, traditional businesses do provide free delivery to their long time customers. NHK world recently broadcasted a documentary where a local rice producer have been free delivering rice to local seniors for many many years.

On a 200K-250K vintage Rolex watch ships from Japan to US, the shipping and insurance cost will be at least 5K USD or more.

Thanks for the comment. I wasn’t thinking about the insurance, and obviously, never made a 6 digit purchase except for my house😔. Is this why it’s so expensive to get an overhaul in Switzerland from Japan (btw I’m Japanese)? I once had to pay approximately US$3,000 for an O/H of one of my JLCs. No wonder JLC Japan never disclosed the breakdown.

Canada destroys everywhere for duty, tax, customs brokerage, fees and surcharges. Those fees can exceed the cost of the item sometimes.

It’s often cheaper for me to buy a plane ticket and go to a watch, rather than have it sent to me 😂😠
