Quick Litmus Test for Quality

I'm not a complicated man and I don't like complicated things.

Simple would be the best way to describe my brain.

Here are the things I personally look for as an immediate, simple, and uncomplicated litmus test to tell myself if a watch is good or not. Of course, over time any other quality issues may reveal themselves, but in my experience if the below things are good then usually that means the watch is gonna be just fine.

  1. Bezel action

Everyone has their own standard of what a good bezel action feels like.

2. Crown action

To me, there's nothing worse than a poorly threaded wobbly crown. It might as well be a semi-detached scab flapping in the wind.

3. Ease of bracelet removal/installation

Ever thought of this one? Some watches are an absolute dream to remove/install bracelets. Other watches can be HELL. How easy or painful this process is is my way of determining a brand's machining skills.

Price is always going to be a major point of consideration for overall quality, but there are too many grey areas; too many intangible things that can't always be seen on paper to determine if a watch is "worth it". The above things are my quick and easy way to decide for myself if a watch is, at the very least, a solid and well-built watch.

Are you going to do a "Seiko 5 vs Ranger" type of (clickbaity) video?

Probably not. I would do a "some field watches I like" video featuring the SRPG27 and Ranger though.

I'd like to think I've avoided click-bait videos but I also wouldn't put it past me😈

Perhaps on some watches? I dunno, I've personally never tried to replace a bezel or crown from an Omega with third party parts.

The ease of bracelet removal/installation that I was talking about does not come from the endlinks, but from the lugs themselves.

Drilled lugs aren't anything special until you've experienced them and then you realize you've been in an abusive relationship with watches this whole time🤣
