Question - Servicing Quartz Mondaine, is it worth it?

Hello, I have a couple of questions about my Quartz Mondaine Helvetica watch. The battery has run flat, and I am preparing to get it replaced.

1 - Someone pointed out to me that Mondaine recommend servicing their quartz watches every 5 years. Mine has just hit the 5 year mark, is it really necessary?

I have family members who have had their old quartz watches (such as an Omega for example) and never had it serviced in 25 years and they still run fine.

If it's really important to do it I will, but I'd rather avoid having to post it off to the Mondaine service centre and paying for the service if it is unnecessary.

2 - I have also read that it's important not to leave the watch with a flat battery for too long. I have left mine for about 12 months. Is this anything to worry about?

Thanks in advance.

  1. I don't plan to ever service any of my watches - mechanical or otherwise - until something serious goes wrong
  2. If the battery hasn't already decayed and leaked toxic fluids all throughout your watch, it should be fine.  But, get that battery replaced BEFORE that happens!

I agree.  I service when something goes wrong or tenish years.  Seals can be a factor.  I had one of my watches get condensation on the inside of the crystal after walking through the rain.  This watch was around the 10 year mark and when the watchmaker opened it up, he said the seals fell apart. You can get your watch pressure tested when you're nearing the service window if that makes you feel better and dont want to spend the money on a service yet.
