Everything from scratch. – Well in those days they would have drawn the entire dial design by hand, which is why everything is just loosely based on typefaces that were around at the time. Or they made them fit in the space available. A bit like with signpainter’s lettering, which serves a very particular purpose, but would not be suitable for a typeface.
