Why wait for a Rolex when you can wait for a custom Indy?

My office is within a few minutes walk from two Rolex dealers both of whom have only a few Exhibition Only pieces on hand and occasionally a stupid platinum and diamond reference for $60,000 that nobody in their right mind would want. In the meantime, there is a local gray market dealer with a new 41mm Submariner for the “bargain” price of only $20,000. I am quite over Rolex (still have an OP two tone and sold my Yachtmaster I 16622) and have gone to custom ordering independent watches from small makers like Habring2, RGM and Ketelaars. If I am going to wait for a watch, I might as well wait for a customized piece produced in very small numbers instead of waiting for a Rolex which will be one of that year’s annual production of 800,000 to 1,000,000 watches. The order times from the Indys have been between five months and eighteen months. The satisfaction and pride of ownership that I have received when the Indy watches have been  delivered has greatly exceeded the satisfaction and pride of ownership  that I have received from AD purchased watches manufactured by large and larger producers like Rolex and Grand Seiko.

I think one of the good things about the hype associated with Rolex combined with the current bad new customer experience there is that it does introduce people to looking at other brands. I love RGM designs.
